I need you guys to get me to the number one spot on Google for the word Shoes. A colleague and I turned to each other and expressed the same look suppressed laughter. You see there is this common misconception about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) that you can just do a few things to your site and rank high on Google for anything that you want. Obviously it is a smart idea to try things to get your website found on search engines to drive more traffic to your site. With new sites going up every day its more and more difficult to be found and noticed online.
Is it impossible for a start-up website today to take the number one spot on Google for the Shoes keyword? Absolutely not, but if you have that as your initial goal youll be disappointed for quite a long time.
SEO isnt trying to get ranked for one, two or even ten keywords; the purpose of SEO is as simple as making your site optimized for search engines to see what is on your site. Most sites werent built with SEO in mind and need a bit of a tune up to really allow search engines to get the information they are looking for. Each site is also ranked by how relevant it is (i.e. how many other sites link to it?).
A lot goes into making your site SEO friendly, in fact, Google has said that their algorithm for ranking sites in search engines changes on average once per day. SEO is consistent, strategic work in order to increase your sites visibility, its quality of content, and its relevancy.
