Thats right 7 years ago today Facebook the most popular social networking site launched. Only available to people with a Harvard.edu email address at first it quickly moved from college start up to one of the greatest connectors of mankind. Facebooks latest figures have the site at 500 million active users, but that number is a little old, and many believe that it could be close to if not over 600 million by now. If you think about it thats 1/12th of humanity connected to each other by a single website. In fact Mark Zuckerberg was named Time Magazines Person of Year 2010 for just that reason.
Facebook has become an staple in many of our daily lives, and if not your daily life you know several people who cant go a day without visiting the site. In fact Facebooks marketing numbers tell us some really interested statistics about US Facebook usage.
- 150,000,000 US citizens get on Facebook once every 30 days
- 75,000,000 US citizens get on Facebook daily
- There are over 900 million objects that people interact with (pages, groups, events and community pages)
- More than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each month.
These numbers are our best window into the new normal of media. 7 years ago Im sure Mark Zuckerberg never thought that his idea would reshape the way that people interact with each other. Its also reshaped the way that businesses, large and small, can interact with potential customers. With all of the ways Facebook has entered our daily lives how is your business taking advantage?
