The entire IT industry is experiencing healthy maturation, with key sectors such as virtualization achieving even more rapid expansion. Technologies are playing a critical role in helping businesses remain flexible and competitive for years to come, with virtual environments among the top options for assisting firms in this regard.
A recent TechNavio report suggested that the global virtualization market will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 10.4 percent between 2013 and 2018, due in large part to advancements surrounding cloud computing.
The report said there has been an increased focus on Web-based virtual environments to boost efficiency, security and reduce costs. Virtualization helps organizations achieve these goals by creating virtual services, storage devices, networks and operating systems.
"Virtualization services enable an organization to use existing servers and devices to run multiple resources using various applications without degrading performance. The benefits of virtualization are especially evident in terms of efficiency. Virtualization allows IT managers, data center services managers, and IT administrators to accomplish more tasks as it enables them to supervise and manage fewer servers through online virtual server consolidation," the study read.
Achieving virtual security not easy
Although TechNavio suggested that companies are embracing virtualization to improve security, reaching this benchmark is a big challenge for businesses. A new survey conducted by Kaspersky Lab and B2B International found that nearly 25 percent of IT security professionals have little to no understanding of their available security options. Another 46 percent of participants thought traditional safeguards can shore up virtual environments, while 36 percent believe virtual vulnerabilities are lower than those found in physical systems.
Mark Bermingham, virtualization evangelist at Kaspersky Lab North America, said organizations are facing constantly evolving threats from cybercriminals fixated on virtual environments. The survey highlighted the fact that there is a clear disconnect between what companies believe is ideal for corporate safeguards and what is offered.
"With many businesses turning their attention to securing virtual environments, it is critical that they execute these initiatives and understand their options for securing these business-critical environments," Bermingham suggested.
Businesses that overlook security regarding their use of virtualization are vulnerable to experiencing breaches that expose corporate assets and customer information. A single incident can wreak havoc on a brand's reputation and wallet, especially if it results in steep financial penalties stemming from compliance regulations and a consumer base that jumps ship in favor of competitors.
