IT security has garnered its fair share of headlines recently, due in large part to the major breaches that have afflicted well-known brands such as Target. Companies, regardless of size or industry, are susceptible to sophisticated attacks from malicious cybercriminals trying their best to steal corporate information and customer data.
A new Websense and Ponemon Institute survey of nearly 4,900 IT security professionals found that nearly 30 percent want their companies to "overhaul" their systems to defend against threats.
John McCormack, CEO of Websense, said the study emphasizes the lack of communication, security solutions and education impacting organizations on a global scale.
"It's not surprising that many security professionals are disappointed with the level of protection their current solutions provide, as many still use legacy solutions that cannot disrupt the kill chain to prevent data theft," McCormack suggested.
The types of threats testing IT security
There are so many dangers stemming from cyberattacks that it can be a monumental task for businesses and their staff members to identify all of these hostile actions simultaneously. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute, said advanced persistent threats and data exfiltration are among the top IT fears affecting tech professionals today.
"These fears manifest because they believe their technology is in need of an overhaul and there is a widening gap in the knowledge and resource sharing among IT security professionals and executive staff. Encouragingly, the survey revealed plans for technology and education investment in place for the future," Ponemon added.
Businesses have to take action today before they become another victim of a high-profile incident. Target is still recovering months after its attack, proving that a brand can fall from grace quickly if it exposes customer information at any point. Firms without the internal staffing and IT infrastructure to safeguard sensitive content may have to resort to outside sources for assistance.
