Traction in the Cloud leads to new business models
Cloud computing has been making waves in the tech and business communities since its inception. A recent study from Oxford Economics and SAP found that not only are 69 percent of businesses planning to make heavy investments in the cloud over the next three years, but they are also planning on deploying more business models in the cloud as well. In fact, 55 percent of enterprises are planning to launch new business models in the cloud in the next three years, compared to the 44 percent that are doing it now.
Enterprises aren't the only ones moving to the cloud. Small businesses are making their mark there as well. According to a 2014 study from Emergent Research and Intuit, 78 percent of small businesses will be fully cloud operational by 2020 [see SlideShare]. The benefits of cloud computing for small businesses include improved efficiency and streamlined processes.
Cloud ERP systems gaining momentum
The cloud continues to make IT processes simpler and quicker due to easy deployment and less maintenance hassle in the long run. One area where cloud computing has been shown to be useful is with enterprise resource planning solutions. In 2013, research firm Gartner found that 47 percent of businesses surveyed were planning to move their core ERP systems to the cloud within five years.
However, according to Forbes contributor Louis Columbus, ERP cloud adoption is happening more quickly than Gartner's survey predicts. This could be for many reasons. For instance, many legacy ERP systems won't remain compliant with industry regulations as policies and technologies continue to evolve. Two-tier ERP strategies will depend on the cloud to function properly, and cloud-based ERP will allow industries like defense and aviation to speed up their supply chains - something legacy systems have a hard time doing.
